Composition and form of release
Dirofen tablets – a combined anthelmintic for animals (International non-proprietary name: fenbendazole + pyrantel pamoate). 1 g of tablets contains 250 mg of fenbendazole and 75 mg of pyrantel pamoate, as well as auxiliary components. In appearance, it is a tablet for oral administration. 6 tablets are packaged in a laminated blister, 1 blister and stickers for a veterinary passport are placed in each cardboard box.
Pharmacological properties
Dirofen tablets is an effective combined preparation with a wide spectrum of activity against cestodes and nematodes, including Toxocara canis, Toxocara mystax, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria spp., Ancylostoma spp., Trichuris vulpis, Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus granulosus latulosus, Echinococatus multilocothularisularis Dipylidium caninum, Multiceps multiceps, Taenia spp., Parasitizing carnivores. The active ingredients included in the drug: fenbendazole and pyrantel pamoate exhibit synergistic action in inhibiting the parasite fumarate reductase enzyme, which causes the development of persistent depolarization of muscle cells in it, disrupts energy metabolism and ultimately leads to death. When the drug enters the gastrointestinal tract, fenbendazole and pyrantel pamoate are partially absorbed in the intestine (pyrantel pamoate is poorly absorbed from the intestinal lumen and due to this, the effect of the drug on helminths becomes longer). The components of the drug are excreted from the body mainly in feces and, to a lesser extent, in urine within 24 – 48 hours. Dirofen tablets, according to the degree of effect on the body, are classified as moderately hazardous substances and in recommended doses do not have embryotoxic, teratogenic and sensitizing effects.
Indications
Prevention and treatment of nematodes and cestodoses in dogs and cats (including mixed infestations in animals).
Doses and method of administration
Dirofen tablets are administered to animals once individually in the morning feeding with a small amount of food (in a piece of sausage, meat, with minced meat or porridge) at a dose of 1 tablet of the drug per 5 kg of body weight. A preliminary fasting diet and the use of laxatives are not required when using the drug. For prophylactic purposes, deworming is carried out every 3 months, as well as before each vaccination. Therapeutic measures against nematodes and cestodes are carried out according to indications. With a strong degree of invasion, Dirofen tablets can be reapplied after 10 days. For pregnant females, the drug is prescribed 3 weeks before the expected birth with caution, under the supervision of a veterinarian, for lactating females – 2 – 3 weeks after birth.
